Description: Fitzroya cupressoides is the largest tree species in South America, normally growing to 40-60 m, but occasionally more than 70 m in Argentina. It is the sole extant species in the genus.3 One especially large tree of this species in Alerce Costero National Park in Chile has been estimated to be more than 5000 years old, which, if true, would make it the oldest tree in the world.5
