Description: The species is dioecious. The female catkins are formed with brown spiky balls with bumps. The seeds are very small and winged. Its roots have nitrogen-fixing nodules (actinorhizae) which, in symbiosis with bacteria of the genus Frankia, assimilate nitrogen from the air.5
