Description: Handsome tree, to 80 feet; leaves ovate-oblong to lanceolate, to 5 inches long, glossy above, sith strong pungent odor when bruised; inflorescence many-flowered; flowers yellowish-green; fruit to 1 inch long, dark purple. Sometimes grown as an ornamental tree. Thrives in fairly moist soils. Propagated by seed. The wood is valued for fine woodworking.
