Veltheimia bracteata

Common Name: Forest Lily

Family: Asparagaceae

Country of Origin: South Africa

Description: [syn. Veltheimia viridifolia]

Found in the wild in the Eastern Cape area of South Africa, this species has wavy, glossy green leaves growing in a rosette. Rocket-like inflorescences on strong, erect stalks are produced in spring and early summer. The drooping, tubular flowers are pink, red or pale yellow; the forest lily grows to 18 in (45 cm) tall and spreads 12 in (30 cm). It thrives in part-shade beneath trees or shrubs, and also makes a good potted specimen.

Cultivation: Bulbs should be planted in fall (autumn) in moist, rich, well-drained soil in good light to keep the foliage compact and properly develop the flower colors. Reduce watering when the flowering is finished. They are frost tender and should be grown in pots in cold areas. Propagate from seed or offsets in fall.
