Herbaceous perennial devoid of roots, with scale leaves only, and dichotomously branching ribbed stems to 50cm long.
Resembling early vascular plants known from the fossil record, but now considered a fern ally related to the Ophioglossales due to recent genetic evidence suggesting that they have lost many of their original fern-like characters.
