Description: Deciduous scrambling shrub or small tree. Bark light to dark brown somewhat roughish; young branches, finely hairy, reddish to purple-brown. Leaves alternate, ovate to lanceolate, up to 14 × 7 cm, bristly hairy when young, mostly hairless when mature, veining sunken above; margin entire. Flowers in many-flowered axillary clusters, large, sweetly scented, creamy to greenish-white; petals linear, up to 5.5 × 0.3 cm; staminal tube up to 4.5 cm long. Fruit a subspherical woody capsule, c. 2.4 cm in diameter, splitting into 5 valves, revealing seeds covered with an orange-red aril.2
